Acheron Outdoors invites you to walk the legendary path "Tzavelena's Staircase – Plateau of Souli - Kougi" and discover the heroic Souli, one of the most historic regions of Greece. Our hike begins in the village of Glyki at the springs of the Acheron River, at the location "Tzavelena's Staircase" (40 meters altitude). Just 300 meters from our starting point, we pass through the tunnel of "Tzavelena's Staircase," and after a short walk, we reach the observatory. Here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the imposing Acheron River and the majestic rocky mountains of Souli. About 45 minutes into the hike, we arrive at the modern bridge of Acheron and the traditional arched Dala Bridge. Towering plane trees line the riverbed, and the ruins of an old watermill are preserved nearby. As we ascend towards the plateau of Souli, we encounter low shrubby vegetation, including holly, oregano, thyme, and asfaka, with sparse woody vegetation dominated by oaks. Near the end of our ascent, approximately 15 minutes before reaching Samoniva, the path takes us through a dense forest of plane trees, sycamores, and arias. After 2 to 2.5 hours of walking, we arrive at the first village of Souli, Samoniva, and shortly after, the historic Kougi (600 meters altitude), where our ascent concludes. The return to the village of Glyki follows the same route, with the exception that we take the external path around the tunnel at the end of the hike. The view from the top is truly breathtaking. And don't forget—we hike "traditionally," holding the traditional wooden shepherd's cane. This is a unique experience you won't want to miss!
